COUGHS AND ITS HOME REMEDIES

laxative

Cough is an involuntary reflex. It is not an illness, but rather a protective reflex. A cough is a sudden and often repetitively occurring reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. The reflex occurs when the membranous lining of the respiratory tract secrete excessive mucous which protects the airway from infections. This mucous collects and traps all the foreign particles which enter the airway. Coughing helps us get rid our throats of this mucous. This enables us to keep our airways open and also prevent further infections like pneumonia which can occur.
Cough is also called tussis. Cough can be categorized as acute (less than 3 weeks) or chronic (greater than 3 weeks). In addition, some people cough more often than others because individuals vary in the amount of irritation they can tolerate.

Coughing being mostly involuntary can also be voluntary. The cough reflex consists of three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the glottis, usually accompanied by a distinctive sound. Cough can be classified on the basis of the duration for which they last and also the content of the sputum they produce.
The main symptom is involuntary coughing. It could be accompanied by other symptoms like fever, body aches, difficulty in swallowing, throat ache, pain in the ribs etc. Other symptoms can be sore throats, sinus pressure, chills, post nasal drip, malaise, nausea, vomiting etc if the cough is infectious. The cause of cough can be various such as Inflammation of larynx or pharynx, Smoking, Exposure to allergens, like dust, smoke, pollen grains and chemical fumes, Asthma, Weather changes, Acute/ Chronic sinusitis, Bronchitis, Common cold, Hay fever, Influenza (flu), Laryngitis, Lung cancer, Medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Pleurisy, Pneumonia, Postnasal drip, Respiratory syncytial virus (especially in young children), Respiratory tract infection, Tuberculosis, Whooping cough.
