Infertility – it can be a most dreaded word. One that invokes sadness and despair for those who are desperate to have a child. One in every six couples of childbearing age has an infertility problem. Infertility is usually defined as the failure to conceive after a year or more of regular sexual activity during the time of ovulation. It may also refer to the inability to carry a pregnancy to term.
There are commonly two types of infertility-primary infertility is infertility without ever conceiving or successfully carrying a pregnancy to a live birth and secondary infertility is the inability to conceive again after one or more successful pregnancies.
Pinpointing the exact cause of the problem can be difficult. Ovulation, fertilization, and the journey of the fertilized ovum through the fallopian tube and finally into the uterus are highly intricate processes. Many events must work together perfectly for pregnancy to occur. The symptoms may include irregular menses, delayed menses and painful menses and obvious lack of conception.
Sterility is increasingly becoming common. Sterility mainly caused by loss of essential glands or organs of reproduction, or a decrease in their functions. Pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian failure and uterine fibroids can also cause infertility in women. Gonorrhoea, syphilis, and inflammation of the fallopian tubes can also be the reasons of infertility in women. Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease that strikes 4 million American a year, causes many cases of infertility.
The causes can be obviously linked with incomplete daily nutritional supplementation, late pregnancies, tension, anxiety, genetic reasons. Fertility begins to decline when a woman reaches her mid-30s, and rapidly declines after her late 30s. Cigarette smoking, drugs and alcohol can impair woman fertility. Some women develop antibodies to their partners’ sperm, in effect becoming allergic to them. Certain kinds of birth control continue to reduce ovulation even after they are no longer used. Chronic anemia, constipation, and leucorrhoea aggravate infertility conditions. Obesity or emaciation due either to dietetic errors or faulty metabolism are other factors which call contribute to female infertility.
