Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of the cancer that involves a particular kind of cell. A key player in the body’s immune system, the lymphatic system is made up of a circuitry of vessels that branch out and spread to all of the body’s tissues-much like blood vessels do.
It is commonly known as Hodgkin's disease, is a type of lymphoma first described by Thomas Hodgkin in 1832.
Lymph nodes, found in the abdomen, chest, groin, neck, and underarms are located along these vessels. Other parts of the Lymph system include adenoids, bone marrow, the spleen, tonsils, and thymus gland.
Lymphoma is widely found among children from developed nations. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, about 5% of lymphomas and less than 1% of Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer is found in United States of all the cancers.
Cancer that develops within the lymphatic system is categorized as either Hodgkin’s Lymphoma or Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In most cases of Hodgkin lymphoma, a particular cell known as the Reed-Sternberg cell is found in the tests done to see if you have the disease. This cell is not usually found in other lymphomas, so they are called non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma spreads the disease from one lymph node group to another. This disease also develops systemic symptoms as it gets into advanced stage. The disease could be characterized with Sternberg cells (RS cells) presence on microscopic examination. There are two main types of Hodgkin's lymphoma: classical and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), the body ability to fight off infection is significantly decreased because fewer than normal white blood cells are produced. NHL can be low-grade (slow growing), in-termediate –grade, or high-grade and can be deadly within 1to2 years if left untreated.
Cause and Risk factors
The exact cause of Hodgkin's lymphoma is unknown. There are some of the risk factors associated with this disease:
- Age/Sex -- Hodgkin's disease occurs most often in people between 15 and 34 and in people over the age of 55. It is more common in men than in women.
- Family History -- Brothers and sisters of those with Hodgkin's disease have a higher-than-average chance of developing this disease.
- Viruses -- Epstein-Barr virus is an infectious agent that may be associated with an increased chance of getting Hodgkin's disease.
Sign and Symptoms
People with Hodgkin's disease may experience any of the following signs and symptoms:
A painless swelling in the lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, or groin area
