SPERM COUNT / SEMEN QUALITY

Kanchnar Guggul

A sperm plays a vital role in creating a new life. The quality and quantity of sperms in the semen are the next important factors that have a bearing on conception. A low sperm count translates into difficulty in conception. Some of the common problems that men suffer are low sperm count, unhealthy sperm, quantity and quality of the sperm.
Semen is white, pale or grayish white colored liquid. It comes out of urethra (a tube in penis through which urine flows out of urinary bladder) on ejaculation during the peak of orgasm. This means the semen which is grayish white, heavy, sticky, sweet and more in quantity is always fertile. This fertile semen may have the shades of ghee, honey or oil.
The normal quantity of semen will be 2- 5 ml. Each ml of semen consists of millions of sperms. The fluid portion of semen is called seminal plasma. Semen acts as a vehicle to carry spermatozoa or sperms.
The semen which is affected by vata, pitta, kapha and rakta will have many features like foul odor or clotted or mixed with pus or less in quantity. And such semen lacks the capacity to produce children.
Reduction in semen volume can be confidence killer. Everyone wants to increase his semen volume for better orgasm, reproduction and confidence Due to age, weak muscles, hormonal imbalance, problems related to prostrate glands and sometimes acute condition of premature ejaculation cause reduction in the semen volume.

Sperm Count
At least there must be 20 million sperms per ml of semen. The total number of sperms should be at least 40 million. 75% of the sperms should be alive. 30% of sperms should be of normal shape and form. 25% of sperms should swim rapidly with forward movement. Sperm count indicates the fertilizing capacity.

When the sperm count is below normal (low sperm count) the condition is called as “oligospermia”
When there are no sperms in semen then the condition is known as “azoospermia.”

Semen volume
Just like sperm count, semen volume also plays an important role in the ability to conceive and fertilize the egg. Semen volume in men may vary normally depending on a number of factors including time elapsed after last ejaculation and/or the amount of stimulation and foreplay. Normally you would ejaculate around 3cc of semen; however this number varies highly from person to person and depends on circumstances.

.Causes of low semen volume

There are many factors which can adversely affect the production and quality of semen.

  • Infected semen
  • Age
  • Cycling, mountain biking
  • Stress, disease and medications
  • Heat minimizes sperm count. Some ways of loosing sperms due to heat are by wearing tight underpants, bathing in hot water, sitting in hot tub for long hours, being overweight.
  • Repeated ejaculation over a short duration of time.
  • Increased masturbation
  • Smoking and Increased alcohol consumption
  • Excessive physical or mental exertion
  • Zinc deficiency
  • Anabolic steroid use
  • Deformed genitals
  • Prostrate gland disorders
  • Harmful or toxic pollutants.
  • Drugs abuse

Production of Semen
The material that comprises semen is produced in various components of the body.  Only a small percentage of semen is actually produced by the testes themselves.  Other glands help make up the material that becomes part of the seminal fluid.  The breakdown of the production of the seminal fluid looks like this:

  1. Seminal Vesicles - they make anywhere from 45% up to 80% of the semen being produced.
  2. Prostate gland - they contribute 15% up to 35% in the production of semen.
  3. Bulbouretheral and Urethral glands - they produce up to 5% of the semen material.
  4. Testes - contribute the following 5% of semen production.

The fluid produced by the testicles mostly contains high levels of testosterone whereas the material that is secreted by the seminal vesicles is comprised mostly of fructose (sugar) and a substance that helps the semen to clot on ejaculation.  The secretions of the prostate gland help to allow the semen to liquefy after it a very small period of clotting so that the sperm can then swim towards the egg inside the female body.  The bulbouretheral and urethral glands main objective is to produce a secretion that lubricates the male reproductive system.

HOME REMEDIES
  • Have sex & masturbate less often - the more times you ejaculate, the less dense your semen will be. Maintain a gap of 3 days between two consecutive ejaculations.
  • Dehydration is often the culprit in fatigue, exhaustion, and poor function of other body systems (all of which can interfere with your sex life). Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep running in top form.
  • Refrain from habits like smoking, alcohol consumption etc. - Alcohol affects your liver function, which, in turn, causes a dramatic rise in estrogen levels. Even two drinks a day will have long-term effects on sperm production.
  • Zinc oxide as a supplement provides quick and safe increase in semen volume as synthesis of testosterone and eventually sperms. Apart from this zinc oxide is an excellent anti-oxidant which improves blood flow and clears blood vessels by dilating them which helps in boosting libido and endurance.
  • Exercise regularly. Exercising your PC muscle can help you shoot further than ever before.
  • Horny Goat Weed is a natural herb that is medically known as epimedium sagittatum. It is known to boost libido and testosteronelevels. It can give you stronger ejaculations and increase semen volume.
  • This amino acid stimulates testosterone production and improves semen quality. Eating nuts and seeds like almonds and peanuts can help ingest a good amount of the amino acid and so are raisins and chocolate or popcorn and brown rice, oatmeal and whole wheat bread.
  • Another trick is to splash cold water on your testicles everyday (for instance right after your shower in the morning). This will stimulate the blood supply and cool off the scrotum, thus increasing sperm production.
  • Eat Nutritious Food - Diet that's low in fat, and high in protein, vegetables, and whole grains is good for your health and for your sperm.
  • Avoid bitter, astringent and spicy foods. Reduce caffeine intake.
  • Avoid heating of testicles - Wear loose, cotton boxer shorts, Avoid hot baths and saunas.
  • Lose any excess weight, which tends to cause testosterone/estrogen imbalances.
  • Reduce stress levels by learning relaxation techniques - Keep your mind and body healthy by regular practice of YOGA and MEDITATION.
  • Massage body with herbal oil, which improves blood circulation.
  • Try supplements - Certain natural supplements promise to increase sperm production. Checkout some Natural and Herbal, no side effects supplements.
  • Make love in the early morning or afternoon. Sperm levels are often highest in the mornings.
  • Foods rich in zinc are specially recommended to increase the production of semen and testosterone like meat, fish, celery, leafy green vegetables, oysters, beans, and nuts. Foods that are rich in selenium and vitamins B12, C, and E should also be a part of the diet.
