Memory Enhancement

In general term memory means a person’s intelligence and ability of mind to retain, recollect and store information. That simple definition, though, covers a complex process that involves many different parts of the brain and serves us in disparate ways. Memory is important because if there was no memory, there would be no learning. We will forget things soon after learning them and not be able to recall any experience either. Memory loss is something people should not take lightly.
Memory loss is extremely prevalent in the elderly and is largely considered to be a sign of aging, very few people are aware that the situation could exist in toddlers as well.
A healthy brain improves memory and concentration and also reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s and much other disease. Psychologists have classified the stages of memory process into three main categories. They are sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory is a very fleeting type of memory, which works only as long as the experience is present. In effect, sensory memory holds as long as your senses are experiencing a thing. When it comes to improving your memory it is important to practice. As you continue to practice you will find that your memory will continue to improve.
Short-term memory, mind stores information for a few seconds or a few minutes: the time it takes you to dial a phone number you just looked up or to compare the prices of several items in a store.
Long-term memory involves the information you make an effort (conscious or unconscious) to retain, because it’s personally meaningful to you (for example, data about family and friends); you need it (such as job procedures or material you’re studying for a test); or it made an emotional impression (a movie that had you riveted, the first time you ever caught a fish, the day your uncle died). Another type of long-term memory is procedural memory, which involves skills and routines you perform so often that they don’t require conscious recall.

  • Perennail booti is also helpful in curing forgetfulness. Dry about seven grams of this herb in a shady place. Grind it, along with seven kernels of almonds and half a gram of pepper. Add water to form a decoction. Strain the decoction and add twenty-five gm sugar. Drink this mixture, on an empty stomach, every morning, for about a fortnight.

  • It is also important to exercise your mind. Like your muscles, a brain which is exercised will be mentally fit. If you don't exercise your brain, you will become mentally weak. Antioxidants can enhance your immune system and protect your neurons.

  • Wheat germ is a good source of vitamin E, which may help with age-related memory loss.

  • Apples are a rich basis of minerals and vitamins and are good for treat amnesia. You can eat apples with a glass of milk and a little honey for best results.

  • Cinnamon is yet another spice that has shown brain-protective functions. A mere smell of this spice is enough to boost the brain activity and its cognitive functions.

  • Vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid, protects neurons by breaking down homocysteine, an amino acid that is toxic to nerve cells. They’re also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen. (Best sources: spinach and other dark leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, black beans and other legumes, citrus fruits, soybeans.)

  • Milk and honey have been shown to help improve your memory.

  • Blackberries, raspberries, and raisins are excellent for keeping your brain healthy as you get older. These foods are full of antioxidants.

  • Fresh ginger is known to boost cognitive functioning and improve brain activity.

  • Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, and beta carotene, fight free radicals, which are atoms formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals are highly reactive and can damage cells, but antioxidants can interact with them safely and neutralize them. Antioxidants also improve the flow of oxygen through the body and brain.   • Take artichoke twice a week. This will speed up processing capacity of your brain and improves your memory.

  • Almonds are said to boost memory and stimulate the mind. A handful of almonds should be eaten everyday. Another memory improving almond remedy is preparing a paste of almonds, a bit of butter and sugar. This is said to help boost the memory and help calm the body.

  • Blessed thistle herb helps to stimulate the activity in the brain and improves its blood circulation. It also purifies the blood, thereby acting to nourish the brain.

  • Okra, sweet potatoes, tapioca, and spinach. Fresh fruits, especially oranges, and vegetables are also good for stimulating the memory.

  • Walnuts are regarded as the ultimate brain food due to their resemblance to the human brain. Make sure to consume a handful of walnuts daily.

  • Any product made out of soy or soy milk will help you to improve your brain health and thus it creates a positive effect on memory power.

  • Olive oil is found to have a good influence on the brain and on the memory. Use it while cooking or in salad dressing.

  • Carrots contain carotene, which is a memory booster. Eat them raw, cooked, or in casseroles, or make a juice with apricots.

  • Cinnamon is said to stimulate the memory. Sprinkle some cinnamon over your fruits or add some cinnamon to your tea.

  • Gingko biloba, herb is also known to increase the blood circulation in the brain.

  • Rosemary has long been used to boost memory. In fact, rosemary is commonly referred to as the “herb of remembrance.” Rosemary is said to stimulate the mind and alleviate any fatigue. Make a rosemary tea and add to it some lemon juice.

  • Mix together a teaspoon of honey and 1/8th teaspoon of ground black pepper. Consume this everyday to help increase memory.

  • Sage herb is said to help stimulate the mind and increase the ability to concentrate. Make a sage tea and sweeten with honey.

  • Tulsi leaves (holy basil) are extensively used in India as a memory enhancer. Make a tea using the tulsi leaves.

  • Prepare Brahmi tea by soaking Brahmi in boiling water. It is said to consume this tea cold and on an empty stomach.

  • It is believed that Ayurvedic herbs like Shankhpushpi, Mandookparni, Brahmi and Ashwagandha can help stimulate memory.

  • Cumin seeds are said to be very effective in stimulating memory. Grind half a teaspoon of cumin seeds and mix with honey. Consume everyday.

  • Pranayama, yoga and meditation are considered effective methods of improving memory.

  • Sleep is necessary for memory consolidation. Sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea leave you tired and unable to concentrate during the day.

  • Cortisol, the stress hormone, can damage the hippocampus if the stress is unrelieved. Stress makes it difficult to concentrate. Avoid stress, anxiety and tensions as much as you can.
