 HOME REMEDIES FOR MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS

Menstruation is the simple process of shedding the old uterine lining to make way for a new one. In other words, it's the body's way of sweeping out the cobwebs at the end of the month in preparation for the arrival of a new egg and a new cycle; all a part of the natural baby-making process with one goal in mind: conception.
Most women will experience in the neighborhood of 400 menstrual cycles in their childbearing lifetime. And that's a lot of cycles that can cause problems. Serious menstrual problems require medical treatment, since many can lead to infertility, infection, and in some cases, death. But some of the milder problems can be relieved with simple home remedies.
In order to reduce the menstrual cramps try to avoid processed, fried and spicy foods, pickles, refined cereals and refined sugar found in most desserts, tea and coffee since they can upset your digestion and cause digestion problems during menstruation. Smoking and drinking alcohol can aggravate the menstrual problems so try avoid it maximum.

  • Papaya is helpful in treating menstrual problems. Women (especially young females) suffering from poor flow of blood during their menstrual period or those who experience severe pain during this period should eat raw papaya. Papaya helps in proper functioning of the muscles of the uterus, which enable the proper flow of blood.
  • Banana is another useful fruit during the menstruation period. Women suffering from excess bleeding and severe pain at the back and stomach should take banana leaf, cooked in little oil, with curd. This gives fast relief from pain and also controls the excessive blood flow.
  • Add some sesame seeds in a glassful of water. Drink this twice daily when you have menstrual pains.
  • Prepare a mixture of coriander (dhania) seeds and water by adding 15-20 seeds in a glass of boiling water. Boil the mixture until half the water is evaporated. Allow it to stand for some time and drink. You can add little sugar in it as this mixture is bitter in taste. This will give fast relief from menstrual pain and also controls excess blood flow.
  • Parsley (ajmoda) is an easy and effective home remedy for the treatment of menstruation. This is useful for women who either have painful or no menstrual flow. The muscles in uterus contracts due to severe pain during menstruation, and this later cause irregular blood flow. Patient should take 1/2 cup of parsley juice. This juice can be taken with other vegetable extracts like carrot juice.
  • The use of ginger is another effective home remedy for menstrual disorders, especially in cases of painful menstruation and stoppage of menstrual flow. A piece of fresh ginger should be pounded and boiled in a cup of water for a few minutes. The infusion, sweetened with sugar/honey, should be used thrice daily after meals as a medicine for treating this condition.
  • A bath prepared by putting an entire Chickpea plant in hot water is beneficial in painful menstruation. The plant also may be used for a sitting steam bath.
  • Sesame seeds are very helpful in reducing the spasmodic pain during menstruation, experienced by unmarried and anemic girls.
  • Dissolve 2 aspirins, 1/2 tsp. of sugar and 1/2 tsp. of honey into 1/2 cup of water. Drink this solution if you are missing periods. This is very effective home remedy for menstruation and will lead to regular menstrual cycle.
    Boil 1 cup of black beans in 5 cups of water and drink the juice half cup before your 3 meals this will help regulate menstruation.
  • Place a pinch of dried ginger in a cup of hot boiling water forming tea then let it stand for at least 5 minutes. It provides relief from cramps.
  • Drink about 2 to 3 glasses of tomato juice every day. It helps in the improvement of the blood circulation. Most beneficial for amenorrhea.
  • Take a teaspoon of grinded thoroughly mint leaf and a teaspoon of honey twice a day to get relief from cramps.
  • One benefits the most from this home remedy for amenorrhea.
  •  Massage lobelia extract into any area that is cramped. Drink a tea of red raspberry leaves to prevent and reduce the severity of menstrual cramps.
  •  Make a paste of 6 to 8 almonds with a cup of milk or egg yolk and a half tea spoon of sesame powder and a teaspoon of honey. This helps to relieve cramps.
  • Drink a glass of milk with half teaspoonful of cinnamon. Consume it every night as it helps to relieve cramps. A very beneficial remedy for amenorrhea or boil coriander seeds in water, making a tea. Add honey as desired. This is an old home remedy to treat menstrual problems.
  • In order to get relief from menstrual cramps wrap a hot and wet towel around the mid section or the pelvis. This is very beneficial home remedy for amenorrhea.
HERBAL TREATMENT
  • Asoka is used to get relief from menstruation pain. The bark of the Asoka tree is given to women who experience extreme blood loss during menstruation due to leucorrhea or uterine fibroids. It has a stimulating effect on the uterine wall and the mucus layer in the reproductive tract.
  •  Bamboo leaves are prescribed for menstruation pain. Regular consumption of the leaves of the bamboo is prescribed to promote and regulate the menstrual flow.
  •  A decoction of bloodwort is used to correct irregular periods. Its oil is also used in the treatment of female reproductive disorders.
  •  Seeds of chicory are prepared into a decoction to treat problems of obstructed menstruation.
  •  Dill herb is efficient in stimulating menstrual cycles. It helps women who have delayed periods to get their periods on time. Young anemic girls are prone to spasmodic menstruation, which can be quite painful. A decoction of dill is prepared with the leaves of parsley to treat such problems.
     Indian Spikenard (jatamansi) is a very useful herb in the treatment of painful and irregular periods.
  •  Asafoetida is very useful in increasing the secretion of the female hormone, progesterone. Thus it facilitates menstruation. Fry asafetida gum in ghee and mixed with goat’s milk and a spoonful of honey for a month. This will reduce the pains during menstruation and also make the flow reduced.
  •  Lemon grass is also beneficial in painful and difficult menstruation. It can be taken in the form of a tea.
  •  The Indian aloe is a stimulant of the uterus. Hence it is given in cases of painful menstruation.
  • Marigold is another useful herb that is very effective for the menstruation-related problems. Women suffering from severe pain during this period should take 1-2 tablespoon of marigold extract two times a day. This also regulates the blood flow during menstruation.
  • The juice of the fresh mango bark is another valuable remedy for heavy bleeding during menstruation. The juice is given with the addition of white of an egg or some mucilage- a kind of vegetable glue obtained from a plant, and a small quantity of the kernel of a poppy. As an alternative, a mixture of 10 ml of a fluid extract of the bark, and 120 ml of water may be given in doses of one teaspoon every hour or two.
  • The herb hermal is useful in regulating the menstrual periods. It is especially beneficial in painful and difficult menstruation. Two tablespoons of the seeds should be boiled in half a litre of water, till it is reduced by one - third. This decoction should be given in 15 to 30ml doses.  
  • The herb Indian barbery is also useful in case of excessive bleeding. It should be given in doses of thirteen to twenty-five grams daily.
  • The herb rough chaff is also valuable in excessive menstruation. An infusion of the herb should be prepared by steeping 15 gm of rough chaff in 250 ml of water and used for treating this condition.
  • Beet juice when taken in dose of 60-90 grams twice a day provides a relief from all kinds of menstrual problems.
  • Yarrow also has anti-spasmodic property; this property can help in smoothing smooth-muscle cramping, thereby treating menstrual cramps.
  • For treating delayed menstrual problem, you may take 3-4 cups of cold yarrow tea in a day.
  • Shepherd’s purse, nettles are natural herbs can be used to stop excess bleeding.
  • Agnus castus fruit, also known as chaste tree berry (Vitex) has many medicinal properties, helps alleviate symptoms of pre menstrual syndrome.
